Parnell Bungalow — Renovation & Extension

This Parnell project sensitively reworks an original timber bungalow, retaining its street-facing character while adding a contemporary rear extension that transforms how the home lives day-to-day.

The new pavilion opens the rear of the house to light, view and garden. A pitched gable form — clad in vertical timber weatherboard with a dark steel roof and louvred gable screens — references the proportions of the original cottage but reads as unmistakably modern. Full-height glazing wraps the gable end, framing a city skyline view from the new living space and pulling natural light deep into the plan.

Inside, the open-plan kitchen, dining and living zone is anchored by a generous Carrara marble island on a solid timber base, paired with matt black joinery and a herringbone tile splashback. Raked white-lined ceilings, oak flooring and a full-height bookcase wall give the space warmth and a quiet, library-like calm.

Upstairs, the new bathroom continues the restrained palette — twin wall-hung basins, a freestanding tub and floor-to-ceiling glazing that opens to the treetops.

The result is a considered extension that respects the bungalow's heritage while delivering a light-filled, family-focused home tailored to modern living.
