Bespoke kitchen & laundry inspired by retro design
This project involved the thoughtful renovation of an existing kitchen, combining careful preservation of original materials with modern functionality and design. A key focus was the meticulous removal of the existing Rimu kitchen, allowing for a significant portion of the solid Rimu panels to be salvaged, refreshed, and seamlessly integrated into the new kitchen.
To enhance the flow and openness of the home, two existing doorways were widened and partially removed, creating a stronger connection between the kitchen, back door lobby, and adjoining living spaces. Structural refinements included levelling both the floor and ceiling—by up to 40mm across a 3.5m span—to establish precise, level surfaces for the new kitchen joinery.
The project also required careful coordination of client-appointed subtrades, ensuring efficient sequencing and maintaining momentum throughout the build. Finishing details were handled with sensitivity to the home’s character, including the installation of custom Rimu trims to match existing interior elements.
New flooring in the form of Moduleo Transform (Macaw) vinyl planks was installed throughout the kitchen and laundry, providing durability with a contemporary aesthetic. The final result is a bespoke kitchen inspired by 1960s–70s design, featuring a blend of recycled and restored Rimu panels alongside new cabinetry and modern appliances—successfully balancing heritage character with updated performance and style.
