With their equestrian teaching business being in a rural location our clients often found it made sense for students to stay overnight.  They came to Smith & Sons Upper Hutt with the idea to either knock down or renovate their unused cowshed to create a self-contained cottage.  After working closely together a design to reuse the existing structure was agreed.

The old tank room was retained and became the main bedroom and bathroom.  What had previously been the milking area became a modern kitchen, dining and lounge area with an adjoining feed room. Where free-standing sheds had once been a second bedroom and tack room were constructed.

The resulting building is practical, stylish, light-filled and full of character.  The textured concrete finishes and reuse of some steel from the milking shed give a nod to the building's history. Our clients love the final result and we thoroughly enjoyed working with them to achieve it.
