Heritage Castle Kitchen Transformation

The homeowners of a historic castle property in Onewhero approached our team at Smith & Sons Franklin with a vision to redesign their spaces, focusing on creating a spacious new kitchen and adding a scullery. Given that the property was built around 1910, they were keen to preserve the heritage charm of the building throughout the renovation. During the design phase, the decision was made to remove the load-bearing wall separating the original kitchen from the maids' quarters, which was being used as a storage room at the time. This structural change required the installation of steel beams to support the space, and once completed, it opened a large area perfect for the new kitchen.

The talented team at Kitchen Inspirations designed and crafted the new kitchen. With the room featuring extensive joinery, they opted to create a large central island, providing ample bench space and storage. Additionally, the newly created scullery offers extra storage and counter space.

This kitchen combines classic elegance with modern functionality, featuring sage green shaker-style cabinetry, brass hardware, marble bench tops, and a double sink. Brass pendant lights illuminate the space, complementing the new warm herringbone wood flooring from JB’s Flooring Xtra. The black stove sits in an arched recess with a patterned tile backsplash and brass utensil rail. All new timber joinery from Westpine Joinery was installed including the new french doors and new entry door. The non-working fireplace was replaced, and the adjacent mudroom was fully redecorated, featuring new black slate tiles from Tile Warehouse Pukekohe.

The result is a seamless blend of classic charm and modern practicality - exactly what the homeowners envisioned.
